>> he has the shirt on. >> i know. it has been like 60 years since the nationals had a baseball team that was a winner. >> he is not taking it off all morning long. >> you're right. that's because it's extra tight and i can't take it off. we have clouds out there and some rainy skies for our early celebrations this morning. a little rain moved through the district but not a whole lot. you can see igenerally moving from the southwest to the northeast. so out towards winchester and front royal, we are getting steady showers and these showers will be creeping east during the course of the day as we continue to watch the storminess develop to our south. temperature in the mid-70s later this affect. we have some rain, perhaps th possibility some of thunderstorms in the forecast later today as well. we'll have more detail in just a minute. back to you. >> thank you. a devastating boating

accident in hong kong tops our stories this morning. hong kong government officials say more than 30 people are dead and dozens more injured after a boat carrying utility workers colieded with the ferry. the boat was taking the workers and their families for a fireworks display for china's national day. a decades-old mystery on the way to being solved today. scientists at michigan state university are analyzing soil samples that will help determine whether the remains of jimmy hoffa could be buried in a residential area of the city. the findings should be released today and they should be able to tell police whether human remains are present. the teamsters boss disappeared almost 40 years ago and his fate remains a mystery. occupy protesters are expected to continue today with a veterans march planned at noon at freedom plaza.

this week marks the one-year anniversary since the group began protests here in d.c. they want to bring new attention to the same issues that made them begin the movement in the first place last year. president barack obama is still at a desert resort huddling with advisors as he gets ready for tomorrow's first debate with republican mitt romney. romney made a campaign appear snow is in denver and told the crowd he would honor temporary work permits for young illegal immigrants because of an executive order signed by the president. call day lose-win. the phillies beat the nationals 2-0 last night but the second place braves also lost which clinches the nationals' first nl east divisional title. the team brought the celebration on to the field to share it with the fans. the celebration spilled over onto south capital street and beyond last night.

park, home of the division champions with more on the celebration. i'm sure it will be an exciting time when people wake up this morning. they will be in a great mood. >> i think they are. i'm surprised we don't see any more confetti out here. a big celebration of fans packed into nationals park last year. they were expecting a win against the phillies to lock in their place in the division playoffs that. win didn't happen. in it was a loss by the atlanta braves that put them there. the braves lost to the pittsburgh pirates. it was in the books during the last inning ever the nationals game. nats unable to score against the phillies monday night but the celebration after that last out erupted anyway. players high fived and hugged in the dugout and when the game ended, fireworks lit up the sky. it has been a long time coming for fans of washington baseball, the first post-season

in 79 years. >> this whole year was a huge group effort. everyone came together to help us get to where we are right now, i haven't thought about me or myself and how long i've been here. >> i'm happy for the guys that have been here for so long. this is fun. this is great. this is just one step and the celebrations get more and more fun as we go on. >> all game, they were loud and they were sold out. i guess that's what i look forward to in the post-season. >> it is especially season considering that the nationals in 2008 and 2009, their record was so bad, they were in the bottom of the league. that helped them to add some of the great player that are now being credited with a lot of washington successes today. we do know i just checked on some of the schedules, the first home game for the playoffs is sold out but the

workers to celebrate china's national day colieded with a ferry last night. officials say the boat sank shortly after. rescuers are still working to recover more bodies. police in frederick, maryland say they are dealing with a violent crime speak that does includes the city's first murder of the year. lamont ellis was found dead in an alley. he had been shot multiple times. while fox 5 was working this story, conducting interviews at police headquarters, shots rang out nearby. officers raced to that scene t turned out to be a street fight involving 15 to 20 people along west south street. one person is stabbed and is in serious condition. no word for the two incidents are related. today marks 10 years since the d.c. sniper attack. john allen muhammad and lee boyd malvo were eventually

captured and cop stricted of the killings. malvo is now 27 and serving a life sentence. occupy d.c. protesters are expected to continue their marches today with a veterans march at noon. yesterday, they marched from freedom plaza to the commerce building saying they want to remain peaceful to convey their message against corporate greed and politics. this week marks the beginning of the encampment at macpherson square and that anniversary. a suspect tasered, punched and kicked and it was captured on dash cam. the question is did police go too far. we are checking more headlines coming up next.

police are hoping for new clues today in a decades-old mystery. scientists at michigan state university are expected to release the results of tests on soil samples from the ground beneath the driveway in a residential neighborhood. they are rying to determine whether the remains of jimmy hoffa could be buried there. the teamsters boss vanished almost 40 years ago. a tip about the prior owner of the property would worked for a detroit mafia cap -- captain led to the search. the pope's former butler is taking the stand. he is accused of passing the

robbery caught on camera. take a look at this. flee guys confronteded a man moments after he walked out of a restaurant in riverdale. now, one guy punched the man in the face. he fell to the ground dropping his phone and wallet. he went to get help. the robbers picked up the items and the suspect was arrested monday. he was a juvenile. police are still looking for the other two suspects. after decades of leaning on the fbi for help in analyzing evidence collected at crime scenes, the d.c. government finally has a crime lab of its own. >> it is a $210 million project more than 10 years in the making. paul wagner has more. >> the potential that this building gives to the district of columbia to increase, improve and expand its ability to do forensic analysis, to solve crimes, is just enormous. >> reporter: with oversized scissor, the mayor and other

dignitaries cut a piece of crime scene tape to officially open the new lab. >> forensic sciences will specialize particularly in dna testing, firearms and fingerprints and will have a fully functioning public health lab as well. >> reporter: gone are the days when evidence collected from rape victims sat on shelves untested and dna from cold cases went unanalyzed. >> it was a lot of work and i lot of advocacy. but can i tell you why i'm really here? i'm here for the moms of homicide victims who they labored so long and so hard to try to get this lab built and victims of sexual assault who were victimized twice when their rape kits weren't tested. >> reporter: kathy patterson help put the lab's initial pieces in place. first two floors of the building house the crime lab where firearms will be tested and fingerprints examined. the dna lab, which for the last
